clock December 18, 2009 00:17 by author codybutler

HEAT Boot Camp's first-ever "Workout for a Cause" is centered around getting fit and giving back to the community. This hour-long boot camp will benefit one of our special teammates, John Sanchez, whose brother has been battling lymphoma for several months and has seen major improvements. John and his family have been greatly supported in their fight by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. It's John's mission to help raise money to give back to this great organization.

Come help John reach his $3,800 marathon goal by working out! Each  participant's $10 minimium donation for this special session will go to help LLS lead the fight against blood cancers. Feel free to recruit friends, family members any anyone else you know who'd like to get sweaty with a bunch of friends and contribute to one of the worthiest of causes!

The quick-and-dirty details:

  • Minimum Donation -- $10 minimum per person, cash or check only
  • Check in Time -- 9:45 a.m.

Can working out keep you from aging?

No one has a time machine (at least no one I've met yet), but lots of people swear that regular exercising keeps them from aging … as fast. And new research says that's true!

According to a recent report in the Journal of the American Heart Association, intensive exercise prevents the breaking down of things called telomeres, which protect your DNA from wearing out and help guard against the aging of your cardiovascular system. Long story short, what you're doing (i.e., working out regularly) boosts the part of your body that prevents cell death, in effect slowing your "biological clock" and creating an anti-aging effect. No wonder everyone in camp is so attractive! ;) {Read the rest}

Is it harder to exercise in the morning?

clock December 16, 2009 00:05 by author codybutler

Ever wonder why it can seem harder to exercise in the mornings than in the evenings? According to the New York Times, researchers studying the question of exercise performance and time of day have found that not only are performances better in the late afternoon and early evening, but, contrary to they docs predicted, heart rates are also higher -- for the same workout.

People’s maximum heart rates and sub-maximal heart rates were lower in the morning, even though their perception of how hard they were working was the same in the morning as it was later in the day. In a review published this year, researchers from the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences also noted that athletes' best performances -- including world records -- were typically set in the late afternoon or early evening. {Read the rest}

Sat., Dec. 12, 3-Way Workout

clock December 11, 2009 15:05 by author codybutler

It's time again for another round of our infamous 3-way! [Insert suggestive jokes here.]

This Saturday, we will hit Auditorium Shores for a game that involves frisbee, soccer and football. Meet there just before 9 a.m. on the middle raised field, near the light pole.

Important Note: I'm watching the weather closely. If it's still raining by 8 a.m. with no improvement, we will have to postpone our workout until 10 a.m. and move indoors at the Annex. Please expect an email at 8 a.m. if this change occurs. You may also call me at 512.924.2440.
