Shred the pounds away with Slash, Hendrix and other hardcore rock stars

Why do rock gods look so svelte? This hilarious NPR piece says it's because they shred so hard on stage. Check out classic footage of some of the greats getting their workouts in at the mic. I wouldn't recommend following directly in their footsteps though -- Jack Daniels is not the best recovery drink I can think of. {Read the rest}

Who said you don't have time to workout while on vacation?

Well, I have to admit, after a night of dancing and drinking colorful drinks, it sure was difficult to roll my butt outta bed the next morning. The ship's steady swaying makes it a little easier to stand up right. :) It's always tough, but finding room for  a little vaca workout always makes me feel better, so I made my way up to the spa deck to check out the gym.

Lined with treadmills, core stations, free weights and much more, I surveyed the situation and decided I was set ... so I thought. It did seem odd that there were no bar bells, benches or pull up bars (a staple for me). After spending 5 minutes trying to find a set of matching free weights, I carved out spot on the floor for a little renegade row, push up and squat action. Not 3 minutes into my workout, my questions about the other equipment were answered when the boat tilted about 25 degrees. Within seconds, people were scattering to avoid rolling dumbbells, jumping/tripping off the treadmills and desperately clinging to the small machines that were bolted down. Rule of thumb: Nothing over 6 feet tall is allowed  in the gym, as it can and will fall over and crush you to death. After the trainer announced that the captain had made a quick and told us there was "nothing to be alarmed about," I decided that the "Death by Rolling Weight Spa" was NOT the gym I wanted to belong to.

On to the good stuff! The next day, we landed in Mexico, where I found the ultimate playground for functional training: the Mayan Ruins. At first, I was a little hesitant to go bouncing off historical graves, but the tour guide assured me that I had the go-ahead to climb, crawl and jump around the site. It's all about making your workouts fun right? So here is the program I created:

  • The temple stair run, into
  • The burial grave box jump, into
  • The hieroglyphics wall-handstand, into
  • The water hole high-knee jump over

REPEAT as many times as you can for 20 minutes!
